Big Duck Helps Little Duckling

By Sylvia Gonzalez

Mr. Smith had left his gate unlatched and his big duck slipped through and waddled down the road.

"Quack! Quack!" she said. She was very happy to be free to go as far as she wanted, since Mr. Smith had not seen her leave the yard.

Suddenly she heard a faint quacking and looking around she saw a little duckling crying.

"What's the matter, little one? why are you crying?"

The little ducking still kept on crying.

"Quack? Quack?" asked the big duck.

"I canít swim and all my friends have all gone off to swim and left me alone", sadly quacked the little duckling.

"Sh, sh, little one, Iíll tell you what weíll do. Let us go to my pond and I'll teach you how to swim."

The little duckling was so pleased about this, that she was soon waddling behind Big Duck. Big Duck said, "Quack, quack!"

And Little Duck replied, "Quack, quack!"

As they reached the duck pond in Mr. Smithís yard, Big Duck waddled into the pond saying, "Now watch me, little one."

He swam round and round, flapping his big wings as he did so.

And the little duckling flapped his wings together in glee.

"Now come in and try to do it little one."

The duckling was at first afraid to do so, but Big Duck held his back, and round and round the duckling swam until he was able to do it alone.

Little Duck thanked Big Duck, as he was grateful to his big friend for teaching him how to swim. Now he was able to go with his little friends whenever they wanted to go swimming.
